Acne is a skin disorder that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, causing whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples. Acne is most common among teenagers, although it affects people of all ages.
Although there are various treatments for acne, in many cases it can be persistent: pimples and eruptions heal slowly, and when they begin to disappear, others seem to appear.
There are four main factors that cause acne:
Excess production of fat (sebum)
Hair follicles clogged with oil and dead skin cells
bacteria
Inflammation
Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders, because these areas of skin have the largest number of oil glands.
Some factors can trigger or worsen acne:
Hormonal changes. Androgens are hormones that increase in young people during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce more sebum. Hormonal changes during middle age, especially in women, can also cause breakouts.
Certain medications. Examples include medications that contain corticosteroids, testosterone, or lithium.
Feeding. Studies indicate that eating certain foods, including carbohydrate-rich foods like bread and potato chips, can make acne worse.
Stress. Stress doesn’t cause acne, but if you already have it, it can make it worse.
What could be the complications?
People with darker skin are more likely to experience these acne complications than people with lighter skin:
scars. Dimpled skin (acne scars) and thick scars (keloids) can linger long after acne has healed.
Skin changes. Once the acne has cleared up, the affected skin may be darker (hyperpigmented) or lighter (hypopigmented) than it was before the condition occurred.
